The Trial

The trial for Tom Robinson started a few days ago. People from all over Maycomb County fled to the courthouse, even Miss Stephanie Crawford. Stephanie invited me to go with her but I refuse to go watch someone on trial for his life. I hope justice gets served in that courthouse. Atticus Finch is such a brave man for taking on this case. Many lawyers would be quick to say no to defending a black man. Unlike many other people in this town, Atticus has a very open heart and does not judge people. Unfortunately, Tom Robinson was convicted guilty. It is so sad to see that Tom didn't even have a chance to defend his life. The night of the verdict Stephanie Crawford, Mr. Avery and I were talking about what had happened. When Stephanie saw Jem and Scout Finch she tried to question them and I could tell they did not want to answer her questions so I invited them in for some cake. Jem was very heartbroken by the verdict and he told me that he doesn't think the people of Maycomb County are nice anymore. I tried to remind him that there were many people that tried to help out in the trial. When the children left my house, Stephanie ran over to tell them of the threats that Bob Ewell made to their father. I hope nothing happens to Atticus because he was only trying to do the right thing.
Alexandra Finch invited the missionary circle over for tea. Scout was there and sat with us for awhile, she looked so cute in her dress. All the ladies were complaining about their servants with just a few words I was quick to shut them up, I didn't want Scout to hear those negative comments. Suddenly, Atticus returned home and told Calpurnia, Scout and I that Tom Robinson tried to escape from prison but was shot seventeen times! I know that he tired to do his best. Alexandra was asking me why the town would let Atticus go through all of this trouble just for the justice of Tom. I told her that the town trusts him to do the right thing.
The trial of Tom has been the talk of the town of months and now has ended in a very upsetting way. I'm sure many people are happy with this outcome but I am certainly not. I just hope the town can have some peace and quiet for a while now.
I better get going, I promised Jem and Scout I would bake them a cake. Talk to you soon!

Strange Occurrences

A great event has occurred in Maycomb county, it snowed! We haven't seen the snow down here for years. It is a rare event and the schools had to be closed. If it continues to be this cold my azaleas will die. I also had to cover all of my bushes with burlap sacks so they don't freeze. Jem and Scout Finch didn't have to go to school today so they were questioning me about my plants, they even asked to take some of my snow. Lord knows what they're going to do with it. Anyways, I told them they could take as much snow as they wanted. I don't want it in my yard, freezing my plants to death. When Jem was finished making his creature out of snow he came into my backyard and took my sun hat and hedge-clippers! I demanded him to bring them back to me but Atticus insisted he would only have them for a little while. That man will never raise those children properly.
That night, I woke up to the smell of smoke. I thought it was just my wood stove burning but it was my house. I quickly called the fire department. The neighbours came over as soon as they could to help me save as much furniture as possible. I thanked them all  very much for this kind gesture. I am now temporarily staying at Miss Stephanie Crawford's house. With all of the chaos of my house no one even noticed what Arthur Radley did to Scout. He placed a blanket on her while she was outside. I wish I was there so I could catch Arthur in the act.
Even though I lost my house I believe that everything happens for a reason. I didn't like my old house that much anyways. I can now build a smaller house with a larger garden, I've been wanting one for a while.
That's all the news I have for today, I will be back as soon as I can.

A little bit about me!

Hi there! My name is Miss Maudie Atkinson. I live in Alabama in a small town called Maycomb. We all know each other very well and by that I mean we all know each others business very well. Citizens in this town often don't mind their own business. One family that I really respect are the Finches, I've known them for many years. They live across the street from me and are a very lovely family. Atticus Finch has two great children, Jem and Scout. I often let them play in my front yard if they keep out of my azaleas. The little girl, Scout, has been coming round my house more often these days. I think she is looking for a female role model since she is being raised by only a man. Her Aunt Alexandra really does not make it easy for her to live a simple childhood life. I try to help that family out in anyway possible. Their father, Atticus Finch, is facing major controversy because he is defending a black man in a trial. The county of Maycomb has never seen anything like this. Many in this community are quick to judge him and what he is doing but I think he is showing great courage. He should be able to defend anyone without people making such a big deal about it.
Enough about other people and more about me. Some of my hobbies include gardening (I think I have to best garden in the town) and baking. I enjoy these 2 hobbies the most because they are very relaxing. I know people, especially the Finch children, appreciate my baking. I like to make them little cakes for a treat. I hope that you enjoyed reading about me and my town but I gotta go, it's very hot out and my flowers need some watering. I will surely be back as soon as possible. Bye!
