The trial for Tom Robinson started a few days ago. People from all over Maycomb County fled to the courthouse, even Miss Stephanie Crawford. Stephanie invited me to go with her but I refuse to go watch someone on trial for his life. I hope justice gets served in that courthouse. Atticus Finch is such a brave man for taking on this case. Many lawyers would be quick to say no to defending a black man. Unlike many other people in this town, Atticus has a very open heart and does not judge people. Unfortunately, Tom Robinson was convicted guilty. It is so sad to see that Tom didn't even have a chance to defend his life. The night of the verdict Stephanie Crawford, Mr. Avery and I were talking about what had happened. When Stephanie saw Jem and Scout Finch she tried to question them and I could tell they did not want to answer her questions so I invited them in for some cake. Jem was very heartbroken by the verdict and he told me that he doesn't think the people of Maycomb County are nice anymore. I tried to remind him that there were many people that tried to help out in the trial. When the children left my house, Stephanie ran over to tell them of the threats that Bob Ewell made to their father. I hope nothing happens to Atticus because he was only trying to do the right thing.
Alexandra Finch invited the missionary circle over for tea. Scout was there and sat with us for awhile, she looked so cute in her dress. All the ladies were complaining about their servants with just a few words I was quick to shut them up, I didn't want Scout to hear those negative comments. Suddenly, Atticus returned home and told Calpurnia, Scout and I that Tom Robinson tried to escape from prison but was shot seventeen times! I know that he tired to do his best. Alexandra was asking me why the town would let Atticus go through all of this trouble just for the justice of Tom. I told her that the town trusts him to do the right thing.
The trial of Tom has been the talk of the town of months and now has ended in a very upsetting way. I'm sure many people are happy with this outcome but I am certainly not. I just hope the town can have some peace and quiet for a while now.
I better get going, I promised Jem and Scout I would bake them a cake. Talk to you soon!
